Over the summer I read 1984, by George Orwell, and I think that it contained excellent storytelling.
"War is Peace
Freedom is Slavery
Ignorance is Strength" - pg 4
What I loved about this quote was that it gave a deep message that forced me to think, rather than just telling me what to think.
Elliot--good choice, but as we discussed the other day, probably good to explain your choices a little more. In this case, what message you got and how reading these slogans forced you to think. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteThis quote was a message of a government that controls its populations thought. These 3 lines seem contradictory, however, by thinking more about them, they make sense. War is Peace means, to me, that because the government is in war, they are able to keep the population busy, and therefore keep its cities at peace. Freedom is slavery means that, in order to be physically free from captivity, you must become a slave of "the system" and conform to it. Ignorance is Strength means that the less you know about the truth, the more fervent you are at protecting the alleged truth.
